Representing the region, Columbus was named as the “Best Big City in the Midwest,” outshining Chicago, Indianapolis, Milwaukee and Minneapolis. Other U.S. cities making the Money list of “Best Big Cities to Live” are Boston, Raleigh, Arlington, Colorado Springs and Portland.

Columbus scored high marks for housing affordability, with a median home price of $131,500. Columbus also scored well for job growth, with hourly wage increases averaging 6.2% during 2015 – the highest increase in the country. Meanwhile, our unemployment rate is a modest 4.1%, standing among the lowest unemployment rates nationwide.

Money also praised Central Ohio’s strength in higher education. Our area boasts over 60 college and university campuses. Our well-educated workforce has helped attract over 150 companies to Metro Columbus in the past 5 years.

As the winner of the U.S. Department of Transportation Smart City Challenge, Columbus is investing $50 million in grants, and $90 million in pledges to develop modern transportation solutions, including self-driving vehicles and a fleet of electric cars.

Columbus’s recognition by Money magazine follows a favorable article by Kiplinger magazine, which named Columbus as a Top City for Healthy Retirement in August 2016. In recent years, Columbus has received accolades from Forbes, BusinessWeek and Inc. magazine.
