Columbus Commons Holiday Fair

December 6 & 7, 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  Columbus welcomes the holidays with an extravaganza of lights, music and fireworks! Plenty of activities for the kids. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Admission is free to the public. Children’s rides require a $5 wristband for unlimited rides.

Dickens of a Christmas – Ohio Village, Columbus

December 13, 14, 20, 21, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. December 22, noon to 5:00 p.m. Travel back in time for the splendor of a Victorian-era Christmas at the historic Ohio Village. Enjoy 19th-century decorations, crafts, cooking decorations and fashions inspired by Charles Dickens’  classic vision of the season. Admission is $12 for adults, $9 for children. This is an indoor/outdoor tour, dress for the weather!

Wildlights – Columbus Zoo

November 22 through January 4, light display from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. What’s better than a day at the Columbus Zoo? A night at the zoo with over 3 million LED lights! Celebrate the 25th anniversary of Wildlights with an animated musical light show, live reindeer, special guests from the North Pole, and more. Admission cost varies by age and group size; see admission rates on the website.

Holiday Carriage Rides – Easton Town Center, North District

Weekends, November 22 through December 22. Fridays and Saturdays 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Sundays 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Take in the sights and sounds of the season with an elegant horse-drawn carriage ride. Relax and unwind as you experience the city at a slower pace. Rides begin on Gramercy Street outside of Eddie Bauer. $10 per person; children under 15 are free when riding with a paying adult.

Holiday Pops – Columbus Symphony

December 6 through 8, performances at 8:00 p.m., Sunday performance 3:00 p.m. The Columbus Symphony and Chorus combine their musical gifts to present a spirited celebration of popular holiday songs. Guest star: Santa Claus! Ticket prices vary according to seat selection, see the website for details.

See the 1861 Ohio Statehouse adorned with holiday decorations from Victorian times. Enjoy free guided tours! Walk-in tours meet in the Map Room; use the Third Street entrance. Tours run hourly on weekdays at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Weekend tours run at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. There will be no noon tour during weekdays due to the free noon holiday performances. The Statehouse is closed December 25 and January 1.

Also enjoy free holiday concerts at the Ohio Statehouse! The lunch-time concerts are held at noon, weekdays from December 4 through December 18. The holiday concerts will be held in the Museum Gallery on the ground floor of the Statehouse.

Looking for a fresh take on a holiday classic? Shadowbox Live presents “Scrooge” on select weekends through December 30! This family-friendly show is upbeat and boisterous, yet remains true to the heart of the original tale. See the Shadowbox website for show times, tickets and reviews!

The Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens feature “Merry & Bright” exhibits through January 6! With thousands of holiday lights and several unique displays, there is something for the entire family. While you’re there, visit the Botanica Gift Shop and Greenhouse for one-of-a-kind holiday gifts.

The Kelton House will take you back in time for the sights and scents of a Victorian Christmas. Enjoy docent-led guided tours that will educate you about the lifestyle and traditions of the era. See the Kelton House website for tour dates, times and admission fees.

Backyard barbecues, spectacular fireworks displays, pool parties and family get-togethers are all activities that come to mind when we think of July 4th. The various communities in the Columbus Metro area make it easy to enjoy all of these festive activities because they’re willing to throw the public parties where we can partake. Here is a quick list of what’s going on in the area this holiday week:

“Let Freedom Rock”
July 4th, 8:00am-10:30pm
Dublin Coffman High School
Dublin’s Independence Day celebration will feature a free concert by Joe Walsh, the annual Sherm Sheldon Fishing Derby and a parade that marches through the town’s historic district at 11:00am. The entertainment will continue on into the evening with live music and fireworks. This is the ideal, family-friendly celebration for suburbanites who want to celebrate with their community.

Central Ohio Symphony: July 4th Concert
July 4th, 7:30pm-10:00pm
Phillips Glen, Ohio Wesleyan University
Music lovers everywhere will appreciate this patriotic extravaganza tomorrow night. Featuring music from film and stage as well as patriotic songs from American composers, you’ll get to celebrate our country through song at this concert event. The best part? It’s free.  It’s not a bad way to spend the 4th of July, and it’ll be a nice change from the typical tradition of fireworks and barbecues.

Glorious Fourth: Independence Day Celebration
July 4th, 12:00pm-5:00pm
Ohio Village, Columbus, OH
Those who want a more historic, family-friendly celebration will want to participate in the Glorious 4th festivities, which will take place in a re-created 19th century village. You can experience patriotic speeches, a Grand Procession, Muffins baseball, a concert from the Ohio Village Singers and a community dance. Those with a hefty appetite can even participate in a pie-eating contest, if they wish. At just $10 per adult, $9 per senior and $5 per child, this event is incredibly affordable for large families.

This is just a few of the many community-wide celebrations happening all over the Columbus metropolitan area. They’ll provide a nice change of pace from the typical backyard barbecue and pool party.
