Here are tips to help you enjoy a safe and happy Halloween!

First, plan your route ahead of time. Stick to areas you know. For the trick-or-treating hours in your community, click here for a list from the Columbus Dispatch.

Make sure your child’s costume does not impede movement. Masks, wigs and oversized hats can reduce vision. Use non-toxic makeup instead of masks, and make sure head adornments will not impair your child’s field of vision.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, pedestrian injuries are the most common injuries to children on Halloween. Dark costumes can be difficult for motorists to see. Use reflective tape on costumes and trick-or-treat bags. Also, be sure that children stick to crosswalks and sidewalks. Do not allow them to cut across driveways, alleys or yards.

Keep kids to a walking pace! A running, excited child fueled up on candy can be fun to watch, but hard to catch! Walking reduces the likelihood of a trip-and-fall injury.

Children should be accompanied by an adult at all times. If you have older children going out by themselves, be sure they are armed with flashlights and cell phones, and know the route you’ve approved.

Never enter a stranger’s home for candy, even if it seems like an innocent invitation.

By Ohio law, registered sex offenders cannot make contact with children during trick-or-treating hours. Avoid homes that appear to be darkened. For more information, view this article from WCPO.

While tampered treats are not a common source of injury or illness, it isn’t unheard-of. Inspect all of the packaging of treats. If something appears to have been opened, punctured, or the shape of the treat is suspect, discard the item.

Be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you observe suspicious activity, report it.

No school-age kids of your own? Be a good trick-or-treating host! Clear your walkway and front steps of leaves and debris. Keep the porch lights on. Have some non-food treats on hand, such as coloring books, stickers, or glow-sticks, so that kids with food allergies can have fun too. You can display a teal pumpkin to show you have non-food treats available; click here for more information.

Happy Halloween to you and your family! Remember, as your Exclusive Buyer’s Broker, we serve your best interests at all times! Unlike real estate agents and brokerages who represent sellers, as an Exclusive Buyer’s Broker, we only represent you, the buyer, getting you the best price and terms with no conflict of interest at all times.

Understanding this distinction could literally save you thousands of dollars not only on the purchase price and terms, but also on seller concessions and home inspection issues, whether you are a first-time homebuyer or an experienced homeowner!

People are decorating their homes with Jack O’Lanterns and spooky decorations, starting to buy treats to give out on Halloween night and picking out the costumes they plan to wear. While Halloween is still a couple of weeks away, the Columbus metropolitan area has already started celebrating. There are several fun-filled community events that you can enjoy leading up to October 31st, and as always, my goal is to keep my readers informed about them.

One of the things that I have found attracts home buyers to Columbus and its surrounding communities is the never-ending list of things to do. This Halloween is no exception. Put the finishing touches on your costume, round up your family and attend one of these awesome, spooktacular events!

Dark Woods Theatre Company: The Experience Haunted Attraction
Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays thru October 31st-8:00pm-12:00am
10000 Marysville Road, Ostrander
This eerie experience is not for the faint of heart or easily frightened, but it is definitely a Halloween attraction in the Columbus area that you won’t soon forget. The scares won’t come from gore, rubber masks, fake monsters or chainsaws. Instead, it’ll come from a legend of a lost girl and an eerie presence in the woods. You get the full experience for only $15.00. Enjoy, and remember: don’t get lost, or you could meet the same fate as the girl in the story you’ll hear about on this adventure.

The Scare-a-Torium
Friday-Sunday thru November 3rd-7:30pm-12:00am
Dublin Village Shopping Center, Dublin
Considered one of Ohio’s biggest and best Halloween attractions, the Scare-a-Torium offers a multitude of fun frights for your enjoyment. Get the ultimate fear experience in the Rip Stinkers Funhouse and Toxic LYNCOM Lab. You can enjoy any and all experiences in 3D, which adds to the fun factor. If you’re looking for some Halloween-related items, just stop at the Scare Store on your way out. You won’t find a more family-friendly and festive attraction anywhere else in the Dublin area!

Nightmare at the Museum
October 25th, 2012-6:00-8:00pm
Columbus Museum of Art
Whether you prefer to steer clear of scares or embrace them, you’ll find something at the Columbus Museum of Art’s Nightmare at the Museum event next week! From grim reaper tours to games in the buildings’ many galleries, you’re guaranteed to get into the Halloween spirit just in time for trick or treating. Costumes are encouraged, and you can bring a pillowcase to decorate for even more fun. This is one family outing that you won’t want to miss this year!

These are just a few of the many ways that you can celebrate Halloween in the Columbus area this year! If you’d like to hear more about the festivities around the community, don’t hesitate to contact me and ask! As an Exclusive Buyer’s Broker for the area, I’m familiar with all of the towns surrounding Columbus and can help you find the right holiday celebration for you. You can also read some of our home buyer basics to get some more information that will jump start your home search. I hope to hear from you soon!
