Columbus Can you park a boat or a camper in the driveway of your Columbus home? This is a common question, and the short answer is “no.” Unfortunately, many people take guesses about what is permitted, according to what they observe.

If you see a recreational vehicle parked in a home’s driveway, or see a boat tucked alongside a garage, do not make assumptions about the legality of it. Even if your neighbor has gotten away with parking a camper in his yard for two years, it doesn’t mean you’ll escape attention if you stash an ATV beneath your deck!

Nor should you attempt to circumvent parking ordinances in any case. Parking ordinances exist for the safety and quality of life for all residents, and contribute to good property values.

To help clear up the confusion, we’re posting an abridged sample of Columbus ordinances regarding parking in residential districts. Please note that this is not the complete ordinance; specific questions should be directed to the City of Columbus.

1. In residential districts, no parking space, no yard area, nor any unimproved surface, shall be used for the parking or storage of a boat, trailer, camping trailer or other recreational vehicle.

2. No commercial vehicle shall be parked on a residentially-zoned lot. However, short-term parking of a commercial vehicle is permitted for delivering goods to a residence, or moving furniture to or from a residence, or for tools and equipment actively involved in home repair or similar professional services.

3. No owner, agent, operator, or person in charge of any vehicle shall permit such vehicle to remain parked upon any street for a continuous period longer than seventy-two (72) hours.

Please note that homeowner’s associations may have additional rules about parking. Also be aware that snow emergencies, road construction and other situations may override typical parking ordinances. Again, it’s better to ask questions, than make assumptions!

Additionally, some Columbus neighborhoods require residential parking permits. You can learn about parking permits, parking rules, parking meter cards, and how to address violations by visiting https://columbus.gov/parking/.
