Columbus home buying with childrenIf you are planning on buying a Columbus home, you might be concerned about the impact of the move on your family. If so, you’re not alone! According to a recent industry survey, most homebuyers with children worry about how a move will affect their child’s well-being. In fact, they may worry to the extent that they don’t buy a home!

Out of 2,000 surveyed parents, the Millennial generation, aged 18 through 34, expressed the most concern. 67% of this group said that they were more worried about how a move would immediately impact their child, than if the move itself was the best decision in the long run.

In other words, Millennials seemed willing to give up their own opportunities rather than disrupt their child’s life.

64% of Generation X parents, aged 35 through 49, closely resembled the worry of their younger counterparts. This is a sharp contrast from Baby-Boomer parents, who felt comfortable making major changes and letting the family adjust.

Just how important are the kids when it comes to making major decisions – like buying a home? This may not be a surprise to Madison Avenue, but a whopping 79% of Millennial parents said they base major decisions around their children. Once again, Generation X parents aren’t far behind, with 70% of them echoing this statement. If you’ve ever wondered why so much advertising seems targeted to kids, there’s your answer!

Does this mean that if Junior puts his foot down, that you shouldn’t buy a home? Of course not. What the survey does evidence, is that younger parents are more concerned about “rocking the boat” and possibly disrupting their child’s emotional well-being. When you consider the rapid changes that the Millennial generation has witnessed, this makes perfect sense. Perhaps no other generation has ever lived so strongly in the “now.”

It’s true that moving your family can be stressful.  It’s natural to want to avoid stress, but taking control of your residence might be the best long-term solution to some family issues. Living in a home or an apartment that is too small, or enduring continual rent increases, is certainly stressful. Passing up job opportunities, out of fear of a relocation, could have an adverse impact on your career and income. Rather than avoid change at all costs, it’s wise to take control where you can.

Fortunately, there are ways to honor immediate concerns while making the best decisions for the future. Having confidence in making major decisions, such as home buying, begins with having the best possible information and professional guidance.
