You’ve probably been running around this week getting prepared for the kickoff of this year’s holiday season next week, otherwise known as Thanksgiving. One of my favorite characteristics of this particular holiday is that it’s a time for you to really reflect on what you have and be thankful for it. It seems sad that we have to dedicate one day a year to expressing gratitude, however in today’s world people are just too busy to take the time to show appreciation for what they’re blessed with.

Every year, there are an abundance of events all over the Columbus, OH area that allow you to enjoy the true meaning of this holiday: spending time with family, friends and loved ones. Here are a few of the fun-filled, family friendly occasions occurring around the community this year:

Hunger Banquet 2012
Bexley Public Library
Thursday, November 15th, 6:30pm
It’s amazing how people are in such a giving, charitable state of mind during the holiday season. Perhaps it’s the traditions and symbolism surrounding Thanksgiving, but it certainly seems that people realize what they take for granted during this time of year. That’s why if you could, then you should participate in Bexley Public Library’s Hunger Banquet this year. The Oxfam Hunger Banquet is designed to shed a new light on hunger and poverty worldwide. It’s truly an eye-opening experience. The activity is designed to show how luck is a large factor in whether or not you are able to enjoy a holiday meal in this country. For an educational and inspiring presentation, this is one community event you won’t want to miss this holiday season.

2012 Columbus Turkey Trot
Lane Avenue Shopping Center
Thursday, November 22nd, 9:00am
A Columbus area tradition for over 20 years, the Turkey Trot is a beautiful, scenic run that starts and ends at Lane Avenue Shopping Center and takes you around the beautiful campus of The Ohio State University. The 5 mile or 2 mile run or walk is the perfect excuse to burn some of those extra calories before filling up on turkey and stuffing. You’re running to support the Easter Seals and the fight against autism, so your participation is for a great cause! The first 1,000 men and 1,000 women to finish the run will also get a Kroger Pumpkin Pie for their Thanksgiving dessert.

Wildlights at Columbus Zoo
Columbus Zoo
November 16th, 2012-January 3rd, 2013
One of the brightest holiday attractions in the Columbus Metropolitan area is the Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo. This will certainly brighten your holiday season! Enjoy over three million twinkling lights set up in breathtaking displays. There are also a number of exciting activities for the kids. This is definitely a holiday activity that your family will thoroughly enjoy this holiday season.
